FAQs
What is on the vehicle card?
The buttons, top to bottom: Log Service. Service History and Service schedule. Glovebox and Toolbox. Edit vehicle and Update Mileage. Under the Hood and Pit Checks. Shopping List across the bottom. On a trailer, Utility Bay takes the place of Under the Hood. The photo, odometer, plate, registration date, and insurance date sit above the buttons. A trailer on The Back Lot uses the same card.
How do I log a service?
Open the vehicle and tap Log Service. The log starts as your work. You did it, you get the credit. Check the box only if a dealer or another shop did the service, then add the shop name. Tap every job on that visit, put a cost on each one, and turn on Warranted part only for the parts that have one. Add photos if you have them, then save.
How does part warranty tracking work?
While you log the job, turn on Warranted part and pick 90 days, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 5 years, or lifetime. Two jobs on the same visit can differ. A yellow shield in Service History shows the ones that are covered. A tire replacement can also carry a mileage warranty: pick 1 to 6 tires and set the miles, up to 100,000. Open that job later to add a warranty or take it off.
How do shopping lists work?
Tap Shopping List on the vehicle card. Name the job, add a part, a supplier, and a cost. The list adds the costs. Each line has Ordered and Received, and a check when the part is on the vehicle. Save the list, then tag it onto a service log. Parts search and your saved parts sites are on that same screen, under the lists. Text, email, Excel, and PDF send the list.
Where is parts search?
Under the Hood, right below the check-engine code reader. It opens the manufacturer catalog for the VIN when that make is hooked up. Saved parts sites for this vehicle are in that same block. Ask Grok and the research links sit under it. The shopping list still has its own copy, under the lists.
What is in the glovebox?
Tap Glovebox on the vehicle card, or on a trailer card in The Back Lot. VIN, plate, registration date, and insurance expiration are listed. Registration papers and the insurance card stay behind buttons. Unlock the glovebox and tap a button to see it, then share it by text, email, or another app, or send it as a PDF. Scan it, pick it from Photos, or open Files for a download such as a PDF from the insurance company. Specs and notes are under them. Lock it when you are done.
How do I add an insurance card or the registration?
Set both dates when you add the vehicle, or later on Edit vehicle. Registration renewal and insurance expiration then show on the card, under the odometer. That is the same on a trailer in The Back Lot. Remind me can be off, or 1, 2, or 3 months before the date. The papers themselves are not on the card. They stay in the glovebox. Tap Glovebox, unlock it, then Insurance card or Registration papers. Scan a photo, pick one from Photos, or open a file. Text it, email it, or send a PDF.
What is a job sheet?
Use one when you do a common job, so the information is right there while you prepare or while you work. Torque specs, part numbers, and quantities are on the sheet in one tap, so there is no guessing. Open Toolbox, then Job Sheets. The common jobs are already there. A known spec, such as the engine or a book oil fill, fills in from the VIN. You can add a sheet, edit any line, and save your own. A vehicle starts with oil, transmission, coolant, brakes, filters, and tires. A trailer on The Back Lot starts with wheel bearings, brakes, tires, the hitch, and lights. Logging a service does not change the sheet.
What is Service schedule?
The button beside Service History. What's due shows overdue and coming-up jobs. Intervals is where you set or unlock your own miles and months. Manufacturer is the schedule for that vehicle. Create custom service interval is for a job that is not on the built-in list. You can also start an interval from a job already in Service History.
How do I send a vehicle?
On that vehicle's card, tap Toolbox, next to Glovebox. Tap Send this vehicle. Or open Settings, pick the vehicle in the list, and tap Send this vehicle. Your copy stays in your garage. They save the file to their device, open DIY Pit Stop, tap Receive a vehicle, and save it. They get the history, glovebox, and shopping lists. A very large photo may be left out so the file can send.
How do I receive a vehicle someone sent me?
Save the file from the text or email. Don't open it first. Open DIY Pit Stop, open Settings, tap Receive a vehicle, and choose that file. Confirm Save and it lands in your garage as its own copy.
Where did my vehicle go?
Park in storage moves it under In storage on the garage screen. It is not deleted, and reminders turn off. Bring it back, enter the current mileage, and reminders resume if they were on before.
What does Delete this vehicle do?
It asks twice, then the vehicle is crushed. Service history, photos, receipts, shopping lists, and the glovebox are gone. There is no undo. Download a backup from Settings first if you might want it later.
What is The Back Lot?
The garage is the main part of DIY Pit Stop. The Back Lot is the bonus bay for a travel trailer, fifth wheel, motorhome, utility trailer, gooseneck, horse trailer, tow dolly, dump trailer, or car hauler. The trailer icon under the logo opens it. The car icon goes back to the garage. The trailer card has the same registration date, insurance date, glovebox, and job sheets as a vehicle. Intervals and pit checks there cover bearings, tires, the hitch, and the rest of that trailer instead of an oil change.
What is The Road Ahead?
It is the Road Ahead button along the bottom, not a button on the vehicle card. One screen for the vehicles in the garage. Each one shows the miles and days since the last oil change. A camper or trailer on The Back Lot shows its next service instead. Overdue and due-soon jobs are listed under that name. Nothing due says On schedule.
How do the reminders work?
Turn Reminders on for that vehicle. A new one starts at once a week, until you log the job. You can change how often to once a day or every 3 days, and you can limit a job to one alert or up to 3. Registration and insurance have their own reminder on Edit vehicle: off, or 1, 2, or 3 months before the date. That works on a trailer too. DIY Pit Stop sends one alert for the whole garage, not one per job. For that alert to show on the lock screen while the app is closed, add DIY Pit Stop to the home screen, allow notifications, and sign in. A vehicle in storage does not remind you until you bring it back.
How do pit checks work?
On the vehicle card, Pit Checks sits beside Under the Hood. On a trailer that neighbor is Utility Bay. Open one list, check what you did, and add your own items if you need them. A vehicle already has Pit check, Road trip precheck, Prep for winter storage, and Out of winter storage. A trailer also has Break camp. Save list keeps those checks. Add to service history saves only that list.
What is in the toolbox?
On a vehicle or a trailer card, Toolbox sits next to Glovebox. Copy VIN puts the VIN on the clipboard. Job Sheets holds the specs for a job, such as an oil change or the trailer lights. Open one, edit a line, and save it. Text the card sends the nickname, year, VIN, plate, and miles. Sell sheet is a one-page PDF named for the year, make, and model. The DIY Pit Stop logo is at the top, then a sticker with year, make, model, trim, body, color, engine, VIN, plate, and mileage, plus the service list. Send this vehicle hands someone a copy of the vehicle. Import, Excel, share, PDF, and the sell sheet sit in History tools at the top of Service History. The search box there finds a job, a part, or a shop.
How do I move between the garage and The Back Lot?
Use the car icon under the logo for the garage, and the trailer icon for The Back Lot. Tapping either one fills the screen with GARAGE or THE BACK LOT, the same as a swipe. The info button opens the guide, the gear opens Settings, and the middle button is the tach. Tap the tach and the needle sweeps.
What is a service interval?
It is how long you want to go between the same job, in miles, months, or both. Oil every 5,000 miles. Coolant every 5 years. DIY Pit Stop compares that with the last time you logged the job and the mileage on the vehicle, then reminds you when it is due or past due. Open Service schedule, then Intervals, to set them.
How do I edit a saved service interval?
Open that vehicle and tap Service schedule, then Intervals. The lock is at the top of Your Service Intervals. Tap Unlock, change the miles or months, then tap Lock again. The new numbers save as soon as you move them.
How do I add a custom service interval?
Open Service schedule, then Intervals, and use Create custom service interval. The name stays blank until you type it. Set the miles and the time. You can also open a service in Service History and tap Create service interval. Log a service with the same name and the interval starts over.
Why did the mileage change when I didn't type it?
Mileage can be estimated from the miles per day or week you set. On Edit vehicle, switch it back to manual if the odometer should stay put until you update it. Update Mileage on the card is the one-tap odometer.
Do I lose the garage if I remove the app?
The garage on this phone lives on the device. Sign in so it can sync, and download a backup from Settings before you uninstall. A fresh install without a backup or a signed-in account starts empty.
Does it work with no signal?
Yes. Vehicles, service logs, shopping lists, and photos already on the phone work offline. Recalls, code web search, and shop search need a connection.
Can I add a warranty or photos after I already logged the service?
Yes. Open Service History and edit that job. Add photos can pull several from your camera roll, or take one with the camera. Uncheck Warranted part to take a warranty off.
Can I add a photo later?
Yes. Tap the photo on the vehicle card to add or change it. You can also do it from Edit vehicle.
How do I share a job with the photos?
Open Service History and use the share button on that record. A phone can include the photos. Excel, Share, and PDF at the top of Service History cover the whole history, not one job.
How do I install DIY Pit Stop?
Android: open the link in Chrome, tap the three dots, then Install app. iPhone: open the link in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Chrome on an iPhone cannot install it. Copy the address into Safari first. Then open the icon and allow notifications.
How do I share DIY Pit Stop?
Open Settings and tap Share DIY Pit Stop. On a phone that opens the share sheet. On a computer it copies the link.
How do I get an update on iPhone?
There is no App Store update. Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular and reload DIY Pit Stop. That reload is the update. Your garage stays. Do not delete the home-screen icon if it offers to delete data, unless you are signed in or have a backup.
How do I get an update on Android?
There is no Play Store update. Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular, swipe DIY Pit Stop out of recent apps, then open the home-screen icon again. Clearing cache is fine. Do not tap Clear data or Clear storage. That can erase the garage if you are not signed in and do not have a backup.
How do I get an update on a PC?
DIY Pit Stop updates in the browser. Be online, then refresh the page. On Windows that is Ctrl+R. On a Mac it is Command+R. If you installed it as an app, close that window completely and open it again.
Where do I look up a check engine code?
Open the vehicle and tap Under the Hood, beside Pit Checks. Open Check Engine - P Codes. Type the code from the scanner, or a word such as misfire. The list fills in after a digit or two. The engine box fills from the VIN when that motor is known. YouTube and Web search then look up that code for that engine. Some codes that start with P1 are made up by the manufacturer and open a search for that vehicle instead.
Can I add a custom vehicle?
Yes. On Add a vehicle, turn on Custom Vehicle. That is for a custom build, race car, drag car, pulling truck, hot rod, kit car, replica, or anything that is not in the make list. You type the year, make, model, and motor yourself. A VIN is still optional. If you opened it by mistake, tap Oops and it goes back to a regular vehicle.
Can I track mods?
Yes. On the vehicle, open Mods. Pick a category, name the part, and add a photo from the camera or your photos. You can also log that install in Log Service. The mod stays on the vehicle with the photo.
What is a sell sheet?
It is a one-page PDF for a buyer. History tools, or Toolbox, then Sell sheet. The file name is the year, make, and model. The DIY Pit Stop logo is at the top left, the date is at the top right, and the vehicle facts are in a sticker: trim, body, color, engine, VIN, plate, and current mileage. The service list follows. If the vehicle card has a photo, a small one is on the sticker.
Where are the recalls?
Open Under the Hood and tap Check for NHTSA Recalls. DIY Pit Stop lists open campaigns for that VIN. The NHTSA page is there so you can confirm the list on their site. Recalls for a trailer belong to the tow vehicle.
